This key to the city of New York was one of two keys presented by New York City Mayor (and later presidential candidate) John V. Lindsay at City Hall on August 27, 1971 during a 10-day international exchange.
Records of this exchange are sparse to nonexistent, so this key is historically significant.
It is in a velvet-lined case that is in excellent condition considering its age. There is wear on the outside of the case. The inside is in excellent condition. There is minor wear on the key.
On the key is engraved “John V. Lindsay” and the NYC 1664 seal that says “1664” and “Sigillum Civitatis Novi Eboraci”.
Inside the case, the velvet lining has a goldtone metal plaque that reads: “FACSIMILE OF KEY MADE IN 1812 FOR THE DOOR OF CITY HALL, NEW YORK”. A metal plaque on top of the case reads: ONE OF TWO KEYS PRESENTED AT CITY HALL, N.Y. ON 8-27-71 DURING THE TEN DAY INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE AUG. 20-20, 1971 – OF G.S. CADETTE TR. 108 HIGHTSTOWN, N.J., U.S.A. AND SISTER TROOP 28 G.G. CO. ST. THOMAS D’AQUIN STE. FOY, QUE., CANADA”.
