In 1799, a young British gentleman named James Atkinson, alongside his adventurous bear, left Northern England for London in search of fame and fortune. They found it on Gerrard Street in Soho, where Atkinsons' perfume emporium became the go-to destination for London's elite. Atkinson’s bold, English Eau de Cologne, launched in 1800, solidified his reputation. The bear, a reminder of James' adventurous companion, is featured on the brand’s coat of arms alongside a nod to the rose-scented balm that started it all.
As Atkinsons' fame spread, it became a must-have brand for stylish individuals, including the likes of Prince Tomasi di Lampedusa, the Tsarina of Russia, Lady Hamilton, Beau Brummel, and even Napoleon and the Duke of Wellington. In 1826, King George IV discovered Atkinsons and declared it the official perfumer to the Royal Court, cementing the brand’s legacy.
By 1832, Atkinsons had moved to Mayfair, close to Buckingham Palace, where it continued to thrive for over a century at 24 Old Bond Street. A plaque remains at this location, marking the historic establishment of the niche parfumier Atkinsons.
